UK Drone Pilots Face New Theory Test Before Taking Flight Outdoors

This Christmas, many people in the UK received drones as gifts, but they might be surprised to learn about new rules they must follow before flying them outdoors. Starting January 1, anyone who wants to fly a drone or model aircraft weighing 100 grams or more outside must first pass an online theory test from the Civil Aviation Authority, or CAA. Passing this test earns you a Flyer ID, which was previously only required for drones weighing 250 grams or more. Now, the rules apply to lighter drones, and the CAA estimates that up to half a million people in the UK could be affected by these changes.

Jonathan Nicholson, a spokesperson for the CAA, explained that drones have become a common Christmas present, making it important for people to understand and follow the law. He said, 'With the new drone rules coming into force this week, all drone users must register, get a Flyer ID and follow the regulations. ' The CAA wants people to enjoy flying their drones, but also to make sure they know the rules and how to operate their drones safely.

The new rules are based on the weight or class of the drone or model aircraft. If your drone weighs 100 grams or more, you must take the theory test and get a Flyer ID, which is valid for five years. If your drone also has a camera, you need to register with the CAA to get an Operator ID. These rules also apply to children, but there are different requirements depending on age. Children under 13 can get a Flyer ID, but a parent or guardian must be present when they take the test. Kids 12 or younger must be supervised by someone over 16 when flying a drone, and their parents must get an Operator ID.

The CAA also wants current drone owners and people who already have IDs to learn the new rules. The rules explain where drones can and cannot be flown, and how to protect people's privacy when using drones with cameras. Flying a drone without the proper IDs is against the law and can result in fines or even prison sentences in serious cases. Dr Alan McKenna, a law lecturer at the University of Kent, said that enforcing these rules will depend on resources. He believes most people will try to follow the new requirements, but some might ignore them or make mistakes. He also mentioned that there are bigger concerns about how drones affect the environment, privacy, and safety.
