The museum has claimed that 268 items have been returned with the assistance of the US law enforcement agency. Last year, the British Museum announced that a significant number of ancient gems, jewelry, and other items from its collection were either missing, stolen, or damaged. A buyer in New Orleans disclosed that he was contacted by an FBI agent regarding two pieces he had bought on eBay. The agent informed him that they were aiding the Metropolitan Police in their investigation of the missing or stolen items from the museum. The buyer stated that he no longer possessed the gems and did not believe that the authorities had managed to locate them. The British Museum has successfully recovered 626 items out of an estimated 1,500 that are missing or stolen. Additionally, they have found 100 more items, although these have not yet been returned to the museum.
