Mendlesham Primary's Sound Garden Strikes a Creative Chord for Kids

Mendlesham Primary School has recently opened a new sound garden designed to inspire creativity and joy among its pupils. The sound garden is located outdoors, along the edge of a grassy field, and features a variety of musical instruments and acoustic sculptures. These include tall metal tubes arranged in a row, which students can play to create different sounds and rhythms. The school hopes that this playful, open-air environment will encourage children to experiment with music, movement, and rhythm as part of their learning experience.

Principal Sarah King expressed her excitement about the new addition, describing it as a truly special moment for the school community. The sound garden was officially opened by Matthew Applegate, a local musician from Ipswich who has won a BAFTA award for his work with the Creative Computing Club. This club, founded in 2012, helps young people in Suffolk engage with technology and creative activities. Matthew attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which took place in a wooded area next to the school’s field, and celebrated the garden’s opening with staff and students.

Andrew Stringer, the Green county councillor for the area, praised the school for its commitment to inclusivity and creativity. He believes the sound garden will help all students feel welcome and inspired, regardless of their background or abilities. The school plans to integrate the sound garden into its curriculum, using it for lessons in music, science, and wellbeing. There are also plans for an upcoming music workshop led by Matthew Applegate, giving students even more opportunities to explore their musical talents. The sound garden is expected to become a valuable resource for Mendlesham Primary School, helping children develop new skills and enjoy learning in a unique and engaging way.
