Manx Museum Unveils Stunning Archibald Knox Treasures in Art Gallery Revival
The Manx Museum in Douglas has reopened its national art gallery after being closed for a year, and it now features two newly donated pieces by the renowned designer Archibald Knox. These additions include a rare modernist inkwell and a striking opal pendant, both of which were given to the museum in memory of Martin Moore, who was a former chairman of the trustees of the Manx Museum and National Trust. The inkwell is especially unique, with a decorative silver base and a colorful pot topped with a lid. The opal pendant is also eye-catching, featuring intertwined blue colors on a silver chain, displayed against a black background.
Archibald Knox was a celebrated artist and designer, best known for his work with Liberty and his influence on the Art Nouveau movement at the turn of the 20th century. Last year, the museum hosted its largest ever exhibition of Knox's work, and these two new pieces were part of that display. Now, they have become a permanent part of the national collection. The refreshed gallery also showcases about 170 historical and contemporary works by Manx artists and others inspired by the Isle of Man. The collection includes a wide range of art forms, such as sculptures and portraits. One special section is dedicated to rare World War Two internment art, offering visitors a glimpse into the island's history during that time.
Curator Katie King expressed her excitement about the reopening, saying it was a great opportunity to revisit the Manx national collection and share more of it with the public. She explained that the gallery now brings together well-loved works alongside pieces that have never been displayed before. King also emphasized the ongoing efforts to care for and conserve these artworks for future generations. The gallery is free to visit and open daily, inviting everyone to explore the rich artistic heritage of the Isle of Man. Visitors can enjoy the new Knox items, as well as many other fascinating pieces that tell the story of the island and its artists.
