St Piran's Day is a major celebration in Cornwall, a region in the southwest of England. Every year on 5 March, people across Cornwall come together to honor their unique culture, language, and history. The day is named after St Piran, who is considered the patron saint of Cornwall. According to legend, St Piran was a Christian missionary who arrived in Cornwall after being expelled from Ireland by a king. The king tied him to a millstone and threw him into the sea, but St Piran survived and floated safely to the Cornish coast. He became a beloved figure in Cornwall, known for spreading Christianity and teaching the people how to smelt tin, which was an important part of Cornwall's economy for many years.

The Cornish flag, which is black with a white cross, is closely linked to St Piran. The white cross is said to represent tin flowing from the black rock, a symbol of Cornwall's mining history. On St Piran's Day, people wear black and white clothing and wave the Cornish flag with pride. The day is filled with parades, live music, traditional dances, and community events. In Truro, the main city in Cornwall, there is a large parade that starts at Lemon Quay and ends at Truro Cathedral. People gather to watch the parade, listen to music, and see shop window displays. In Bodmin, hundreds of children from local schools march through the streets, and in Launceston, children perform Cornish songs and dances in the town square.

Other towns also join in the celebrations. Newquay Library hosts a St Piran's Trail, where visitors follow clues around the town to solve a mystery word. Redruth holds a festival with market stalls, live music, and family entertainment. In Looe, the council offers hot drinks, cake, and crafts, and there is a performance by the Pelynt Male Choir. These events help raise money for local charities, such as St Petroc's homeless charity and Porfell Wildlife Park & Sanctuary.

Food is an important part of St Piran's Day. People enjoy traditional Cornish pasties, saffron buns, and Hevva cake, all of which have roots in Cornwall's mining and fishing history. Another tradition is the 'Trelawny Shout,' where people gather in bars to sing the Cornish anthem together. This year, the parade in Truro will be longer than before, covering more of the city. There is also a new event called the Global Pasty Championships at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, where bakers from around the world compete to make the best pasties. The event includes workshops, speed-crimping contests, and activities for families. Money raised during Cornish Pasty Week supports cooking and food education in local schools.
