MPs Applaud Art Teachers Sparking Creativity Across the Black Country

Art teachers and their students in the Black Country have recently been recognised for their creative work and dedication. Becky Thompson, who is an education producer at Arts Connect, part of the University of Wolverhampton, was invited to the Houses of Parliament to talk about the Contemporary Art in the Classroom programme. This programme is special because it encourages teachers to lead their own research and development, instead of just following traditional art lessons. Becky spoke to Members of Parliament about how this approach helps both teachers and students grow. She described how 165 teachers and more than 3,600 students have taken part in the project, and she shared stories about the positive changes it has brought.

During her presentation, Becky explained that students involved in the programme have developed stronger critical thinking skills, more confidence, and a greater love for art. They have also improved their communication and language abilities. The event was attended by teachers, members of the House of Lords, and representatives from groups like the National Education Union, Culture Commons, and AccessArt. Lord Horton led the meeting, and everyone discussed how important it is for teachers to have the freedom and resources to improve their teaching methods. Becky said that sharing the programme's impact in Parliament was an amazing experience, and she enjoyed connecting with other passionate arts educators.

The University of Wolverhampton also showed off their School of Art, which is a modern building with dark grey bricks and a bright orange upper section. There is a tall tower with colourful geometric artwork and the words 'School of Creative Industries' written on it. People can be seen walking up the steps to the entrance, and there are cars and bicycles parked nearby. The university is proud of the work being done by art teachers and students, and they hope that more people will learn about the benefits of creative education.
