Burger King is currently testing a new artificial intelligence system in 500 of its US restaurants. This system uses special headsets called BK Assistant, which are designed to help employees and managers with their daily tasks. The AI listens to conversations between staff and customers, especially at the drive-thru, and gives a 'friendliness score' based on how polite and helpful the staff are. The company says that the system does not record conversations or judge individual workers, but instead looks for common polite words like 'please' and 'thank you' to measure how friendly the team is overall.

The headsets also include a chat-bot named 'Patty. ' Patty can answer questions from employees, such as how to prepare certain menu items or when a machine needs to be refilled. For example, if the Diet Coke machine is running low, Patty will let the worker know. If someone forgets a recipe, Patty can remind them. The main goal of this technology is to make restaurant operations smoother and allow staff to focus more on customer service and teamwork. Burger King’s parent company, Restaurant Brands International, says that the tool is meant to support workers, not replace them.

However, the new technology has sparked some debate. Some people are concerned that the headsets are a form of surveillance and could make workers feel uncomfortable. Critics on social media have called the system 'dystopian,' worrying that it might be too much like being watched all the time. Others have questioned whether the AI will always be accurate, since technology can sometimes make mistakes. Despite these concerns, Burger King says the system is only meant to help teams improve their service and recognize those who do a great job. Other fast-food chains, like Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, are also starting to use AI in their restaurants. Burger King plans to have the BK Assistant in all its US locations by the end of 2026, hoping it will help staff provide better service and make their jobs easier.
