Group's bid to use water to power nearby firms

In Derby, a community group called Darley Community Energy (DCE) is working on an exciting project that aims to harness the power of water to provide energy for local businesses. They are planning to install a special turbine known as an Archimedes screw on the River Derwent at Darley Abbey Mills. This type of turbine is designed to allow water to flow through it, which then generates renewable electricity. The group is currently seeking funding to make this project a reality. Recently, Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero, praised their initiative in Parliament, highlighting its potential benefits. Joanna Watson, one of the founding members of DCE, shared that the factories in the area were originally powered by water wheels, and this project would bring that history full circle. The group has developed plans for a turbine that can produce 100 kilowatts of energy. Their goal is to supply energy directly to local businesses rather than sending it to the National Grid. They estimate that the turbine could generate over 600,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, which is enough to power more than 200 homes. The estimated cost for this project is between £800,000 and £1 million. The site where they want to build the turbine is significant because it is near the location of the first mechanized factory in the world. After securing funds for a feasibility study, the group is optimistic about moving forward with their plans. Joanna Watson mentioned that the study confirmed the project is viable. However, they are aware that this area has a rich heritage, so they are being careful about how they develop it. They are consulting with the community to ensure that the project aligns with the area's historical significance. The main aim of the project is to reduce carbon emissions from the businesses in the mills. The area has a long history of using water power, which is why it developed in the first place. Bringing back this form of energy would be a significant step forward. Ed Miliband's support in Parliament has given the group a boost, and they are excited about the possibilities ahead. Joanna Watson also mentioned that they are considering creating a local energy model. This would allow them to offer lower energy rates to nearby residents, keeping the income within the community to help pay off the initial costs. If the project is successful, they could reinvest the profits into other local initiatives. The group is currently exploring the site further and has submitted a planning application to Derby City Council. They are eagerly awaiting a response. Catherine Atkinson, the MP for Derby North, has also raised the project in Parliament, showing her support for the group's efforts to bring renewable energy to the area.
