Celebrate 100 Years of Winnie-the-Pooh with Magical Forest Puppets and Fun!

Winnie-the-Pooh, the beloved bear from A. A. Milne's classic stories, is celebrating his 100th anniversary, and creative groups are preparing special events to mark this milestone. Winnie-the-Pooh became even more famous in 1961 when Disney acquired the rights to the character, bringing him to a wider audience through movies and merchandise. Now, a group called Trigger is organizing interactive performances and cultural events in Ashdown Forest, the real-life inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood, to honor a century since the first Winnie-the-Pooh book was published.

Trigger is known for its large outdoor puppets, and this summer, they will present 'The Big One Hundred' in Ashdown Forest and other locations throughout East Sussex. These events are free and open to everyone, aiming to bring communities together and celebrate the story's lasting legacy. The local council, Wealden District, is supporting the project, and Trigger will also tour a new puppet to other cultural and heritage sites in the area, with more details to be announced soon.

Councillor Rachel Millward expressed pride in supporting a program that honors local cultural heritage and helps build a lasting legacy for Ashdown Forest. She described the celebration as a rare opportunity to honor a story cherished worldwide while also protecting the unique landscape that inspired it. Ashdown Forest is a rare heathland, even rarer than a tropical rainforest, and is recognized as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is home to some of Europe's most threatened species, making it an important place to protect and celebrate.

This summer, visitors to Ashdown Forest will be invited to explore and discover a new, large-scale puppet inspired by the landscape and its unique wildlife. The puppet will be part of interactive performances designed to engage people of all ages. Primary schools in the area will be offered free workshops, where children can draw their own version of the creature or write stories inspired by 'The Curious Adventurer. ' The public can also participate by suggesting names for the puppet and submitting their own drawings and stories to Trigger's Instagram or by using the hashtag #TheBigOneHundred.

The project is also supported by The Ashdown Forest Foundation, which is providing funding to help protect the valuable landscape. Mark Pearson, the chief executive officer at Ashdown Forest, said he looks forward to welcoming visitors who can follow in the footsteps of A. A. Milne and experience the charm of the forest. He emphasized the importance of caring for the landscape so that it can be enjoyed for the next 100 years.
