Reading Festival Ditches BBC Introducing Stage, Welcomes Wider Talent Pool!

Reading Festival is one of the biggest music festivals in England, and it has always been a place where new musicians can get their start. For many years, the BBC Introducing stage was a special part of the festival. This stage gave new and unknown artists a chance to perform in front of big crowds. Some of today’s most famous musicians, like Ed Sheeran and Florence plus the Machine, played on the BBC Introducing stage before they became well-known. In 2011, Ed Sheeran was just 20 years old when he performed there, singing and playing his guitar.

Recently, the festival organizers, Festival Republic, announced that they are making big changes to the festival. One of the biggest changes is that the BBC Introducing stage will no longer be part of Reading Festival. Instead, they are creating a new stage called the Canopy stage. The organizers say that this new stage will be open to a much wider group of new musicians, not just those chosen by the BBC. They believe this will give more artists a chance to perform and help make the festival even more exciting and diverse.

However, not everyone is happy about this decision. Tommy Longhurst, the lead singer of the band Only the Poets, said that it is sad news for young musicians. He explained that it is already very hard for new artists to find places to play, especially since many small music venues are closing. He believes the BBC Introducing stage was very important for helping new artists get noticed. His band has played on that stage several times, and he says those memories are very special. The BBC said that other festivals will still have BBC Introducing stages this summer, and they are looking for ways to work with Reading Festival again in the future. Even though the BBC Introducing stage is gone, the festival will still feature many famous acts, including some who started out on that very stage. The festival will take place from August 27 to 30 in Berkshire.
