Freddie Flintoff Champions Manchester's First In-Hospital Movie Magic

Former England cricket star Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff and his wife Rachael are supporting a campaign to raise one point one million pounds to build Manchester's first cinema inside a hospital. The project, called the Manchester MediCinema Appeal, aims to create a fully accessible fifty-seat cinema at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. This special cinema will allow patients of all ages, including children at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, to enjoy watching films during their hospital stay. Flintoff described the fundraising effort as something that could feel like a Christmas present for the city of Manchester. In a video shared on social media, he explained that the MediCinema would make a huge difference for thousands of patients every year, especially those who have to stay in the hospital for a long time.

The appeal was launched by the Manchester Foundation Trust Charity earlier this month, and it has already raised over three hundred thousand pounds. Flintoff called this a fantastic milestone and thanked the hundreds of generous donors from across Manchester who have contributed so far. He said it was inspiring to see the community come together to support such an important cause. Flintoff encouraged people to keep donating so the campaign can reach its target by the end of the month. According to a spokesperson from Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, the donations will be used to build the cinema and cover its initial running costs. The cinema will be created in a former lecture theatre at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and will be open to all the hospitals on the Oxford Road campus.

The new MediCinema will feature comfortable cinema-style seating, space for wheelchairs and hospital beds, and room for medical equipment. It will also include inclusive features like subtitles, audio descriptions, and sensory-friendly screenings to make sure everyone can enjoy the films. Up to two hundred and sixty movies will be shown each year, with support from MediCinema nurses and trained volunteers. There will also be options for personalized screenings for patients in sensitive situations. The appeal has received support from other well-known people, including Wayne and Coleen Rooney, comedian Jason Manford, and several Manchester United football players. Kathy Cowell, chair of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, said they are very grateful to all the individuals, groups, and businesses who have helped so far, especially during such a busy and expensive time of year. The hospital hopes that with continued support, the MediCinema will soon be ready to help patients feel better through the magic of film.
