Can India's $300bn IT Outsourcing Thrive in the Age of AI Revolution?

India's outsourcing industry is one of the largest in the world, valued at around 300 billion dollars. For more than thirty years, Indian IT companies have provided jobs to millions of graduates, helping to create a strong middle class. This growth has led to more people buying homes, cars, and spending money in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Gurugram. However, the industry is now facing a big challenge from artificial intelligence, or AI. AI is a technology that allows computers to do tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as understanding language or solving problems. Many people are worried that AI could change the way outsourcing works and take away many jobs.

In the past few months, the value of Indian technology stocks has dropped by about 20 percent. This happened after a new AI tool was released that can do important tasks like checking legal documents and managing data. These are jobs that many people in the IT industry do every day. Some company leaders have warned that AI could remove up to half of the entry-level jobs in IT. This has made investors and workers nervous about the future. Still, some experts believe that AI will not only take away jobs but also create new ones. For example, there will be a need for people who can build, manage, and improve AI systems.

Major companies like Infosys and JPMorgan Chase think that AI will change the industry, but not destroy it. They believe that IT companies will start working more on consulting and helping clients use AI, instead of just maintaining software. This means that while some jobs will disappear, others will be created. According to Infosys, AI might replace 92 million jobs, but it could also create 170 million new jobs in areas like data labeling and AI engineering. The industry is already starting to use AI in real projects, but the money earned from these projects is still small compared to the whole industry. Growth in the sector is expected to slow down, and hiring will not be as strong as before. There are also other challenges, like higher visa fees in the US, which is the biggest market for Indian IT companies. Even though the industry is facing tough times, many believe that by learning new skills and adapting to AI, India can continue to be a leader in technology.
