Zumba Queen Berna Dances Her Way to Community Joy and Health

Berna Akinal, a Zumba instructor based in Gorleston-on-Sea, Norfolk, has been nominated for the BBC Make a Difference Award for her efforts in keeping her community active and connected. Originally from Istanbul, Berna always had a passion for dance. After moving to Norwich in 1984, she spent 25 years working as an accountant. When she lost her job, she turned to Zumba as a hobby, which eventually became her new career. In 2012, Berna earned her license to teach Zumba and founded Team Berna Zumba Club. The club now boasts 200 members and offers four classes each week. Berna says Zumba is more than just exercise; it is a way to improve the lives of people around her. She considers her class members as her family, since she does not have children of her own.

Berna’s love for British culture began in her childhood. Her father, a dentist, enjoyed British music and films, and he encouraged Berna to learn English. He bought her BBC tapes so she could speak English fluently. Berna moved to the UK to study at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, where she met her English husband. They had been pen friends before she relocated from Turkey. Berna credits her father for inspiring her love of music and dance. She remembers taking every opportunity to dance as a child, whether it was at home or on stage.

The Covid lockdowns were a challenging time for everyone, but Berna kept her Zumba group together by offering free online classes. She believes these classes helped people stay fit and mentally strong during difficult times. Berna herself has faced health issues and has supported family members through cancer treatment. She describes Zumba as a release, a place where people can forget their worries and enjoy music and movement. Her mother, Necla, plays a vital role in the club, welcoming everyone and creating a friendly atmosphere. Necla, who is 82 years old, is known as the Zumba Queen. Team Berna was nominated in the Active category at the BBC Norfolk Make a Difference Awards, thanks to Dawn Sandell, a long-time member. Dawn says Berna and her mum do a lot for the community, raising charity money and supporting members outside of class. Berna’s dedication has made her Zumba club a place where people feel cared for and included, showing how dance and community can make a real difference in people’s lives.
