Constable’s Iconic Hay Wain Returns Home for Suffolk Art Celebration
John Constable, one of England's most celebrated artists, was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, in 1776. His famous painting, 'The Hay Wain,' created in 1821, captures a tranquil rural scene in Flatford, near Dedham. The artwork features a horse and cart crossing the River Stour, with Willy Lott's cottage nestled on the riverbank. This painting has become an iconic image of the English countryside and is admired for its realistic depiction of nature and rural life. For the first time since it was painted, 'The Hay Wain' will be exhibited in Suffolk, Constable's home county, to mark the 250th anniversary of his birth. The painting will be displayed at Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich next year, on loan from the National Gallery in London. Visitors will also have the chance to see the preparatory sketches that Constable made before completing the masterpiece.
Emma Roodhouse, the collections and learning curator for art at Colchester and Ipswich Museums, expressed her excitement about the exhibition. She said that bringing 'The Hay Wain' to Suffolk has always been a dream, and its arrival will be a meaningful event for the local community. Roodhouse believes that the exhibition will celebrate Constable's lasting influence on art and culture, and will be a joyful occasion for everyone involved. The display is part of the Constable 250 project, which will run from January to March 2027. This project will include three exhibitions in Ipswich, featuring 'The Hay Wain' alongside significant works borrowed from renowned institutions such as the Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts, and the National Galleries of Scotland.
Constable's connection to Suffolk is so strong that the region is often referred to as 'Constable country. ' Although 'The Hay Wain' depicts the Suffolk countryside, Constable actually painted it in his London studio, using sketches and memories of the landscape. Christchurch Mansion, a historic red-brick building with white windows, will serve as the main venue for the anniversary events. The final exhibition, titled 'Constable to Contemporary,' will explore the ongoing relevance of Constable's art and feature modern works inspired by his legacy. Carole Jones, Ipswich Borough Council's portfolio holder for planning and museums, said the council is proud to play a central role in bringing Constable's work to the town. The project has received support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Sasha Constable, an artist and descendant of John Constable, described the exhibition as 'wonderful news' and said it is truly special to welcome the masterpiece back to the landscape that inspired it. The people of Suffolk are eagerly anticipating the arrival of 'The Hay Wain,' which will allow them to celebrate Constable's life and his enduring impact on the world of art.
