Spider-Man Swinging in £312K Boost for Hertfordshire Council!

Hertfordshire County Council has found a creative way to earn extra money by allowing movies and TV shows to film at their historic County Hall. Last year, the council made about three hundred and twelve thousand pounds from these filming activities, which is a big increase compared to previous years. One of the most notable productions was Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which paid nearly ninety thousand pounds to use County Hall between June and November. The movie stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man and Zendaya as Mary-Jane, and they were joined by Sadie Sink from Stranger Things and Mark Ruffalo, who is known for playing the Hulk. The film is set to be released in July, and fans are looking forward to seeing their favorite characters return.

County Hall was also used for other major productions in 2025. Famous actors like Joan Collins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Gillian Anderson filmed there. For example, The Bitter End, a drama about Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, used County Hall for filming in May and June, paying over thirty thousand pounds. Joan Collins played Wallis Simpson in this movie. Another film, The Julia Set, which has not been released yet, was filmed at County Hall in October and November. This coming-of-age story stars Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs and paid forty-five thousand pounds for the location.

Television shows also took advantage of County Hall's unique look. The second season of ITV's Red Eye was filmed there and aired in January. The council explained that running County Hall costs about two point four million pounds each year, including expenses like bills, business rates, insurance, and repairs. The money earned from filming helps cover some of these costs. In 2023, the council made only fifty-four thousand pounds from filming, and in 2024, they made one hundred and seventy thousand pounds, so last year's income was a big jump. Council staff moved to new offices in 2023, and there are plans to sell County Hall. A spokesperson said that they welcome filming requests and are glad that County Hall's historic and architectural charm continues to attract filmmakers. This not only helps with the building's expenses but also supports the growth of Hertfordshire's film industry, bringing more opportunities and excitement to the area.
