Canada man jumps on polar bear to defend wife from attack
In a remarkable act of bravery, a man in Canada jumped onto a polar bear to protect his wife from a dangerous attack. This incident took place in Fort Severn First Nation, a small community located in the far north of Ontario, where about 400 people live. The couple had left their home early in the morning to search for their dogs when they encountered a polar bear in their driveway. According to the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, the bear lunged at the woman, prompting her husband to leap onto the animal in a desperate attempt to shield her. Unfortunately, the bear then turned its aggression towards the man, resulting in serious injuries to his arm and legs. Thankfully, these injuries are not life-threatening, and he is expected to recover. A neighbor, alerted by the commotion, arrived with a firearm and shot the bear multiple times. The bear retreated into the nearby woods, where it succumbed to its injuries. Following the incident, the man was taken to a local nursing station for treatment. The Nishnawbe Aski police have since increased patrols in the area to ensure that no other bears pose a threat to the community. Alysa McCall, a scientist from Polar Bear International, shared insights with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) about polar bear behavior. She noted that attacks on humans are quite rare, and when they do occur, it is often due to the bear being hungry, young, or unwell. Typically, polar bears prefer to stay far from human settlements, spending their time hunting seals in the ocean. However, climate change has disrupted their natural habitat, causing ice to break apart and sometimes forcing bears to venture inland in search of food. McCall emphasized that if someone finds themselves in a polar bear attack, they should not follow the myth of playing dead. Instead, she advised that it is crucial to fight back as long as possible.
