Gloucester's Charming Beatrix Potter Display Brings Childhood Memories Alive!

A new display celebrating Beatrix Potter’s classic story, The Tailor of Gloucester, has been revealed at the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Gloucester. The display features detailed figurines of mice, a cat, a man, and an owl, all inspired by the beloved children’s book. Behind the figures is a large, colorful painting that brings the story to life. On either side of the painting, visitors can read the first and last pages of the book, printed on two large plaques.

The display was created by local artists Russell Haines and Lisa Turner. They wanted to honor the city’s history and bring back memories for people who remember the original Tailor of Gloucester clock. This clock was once a favorite attraction at the shopping centre, but it was taken down in 2013 because it could not be repaired. Will James, the marketing manager at Eastgate, said that adding a touch of nostalgia is important for the centre. He believes it helps people remember their roots and the special moments they shared at the shopping centre.

Russell Haines, who painted the main artwork, was asked by the Gloucester Business Improvement District and the shopping centre to create something bright and cheerful. He wanted the display to appeal to children and families. Lisa Turner designed the side panels, using the first and last pages of Beatrix Potter’s Christmas story. She said the display has been very well received by the community, bringing back fond memories and a sense of nostalgia. The project was originally started by Nick Brody, who was the chair of the Pied Piper Appeal charity. After the clock was removed, the charity took care of its parts and showed them to children at special educational needs and disabilities schools. Now, the figurines are back in their original place, near where the clock once stood. Will James shared that the clock was a big part of his childhood, and he is happy to see it remembered by new generations. The display has become a way for people in Gloucester to connect with their past and celebrate their city’s unique history.
