Hong Kong and the United States can do so much together ‘if domestic politics can be set aside’, says John Lee

Hong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee, believes there's a lot of room for Hong Kong and the United States to improve their economic and trade relationships if they can ignore political issues. He's upset that US lawmakers are trying to impose sanctions on Hong Kong's judges and officials. Despite being sanctioned himself in 2020, Lee emphasizes Hong Kong's role in regional cooperation and confirms Hong Kong's participation in an upcoming Apec summit, with Paul Chan representing him.

Lee highlighted the strong historical ties between Hong Kong and the US, including a significant trade surplus. He pointed out shared values like the rule of law and open markets. However, he criticized US legislators for proposing sanctions against Hong Kong officials, defending the independence of Hong Kong's judiciary. He also mentioned the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which protects rights and freedoms in Hong Kong.

Lee acknowledged efforts to improve US-China relations and suggested that setting aside domestic politics could lead to better economic and trade connections between Hong Kong and the US. He quoted Confucius on seeking harmony, not conformity. Despite not attending the Apec summit himself, Lee mentioned that several US companies are among those expanding in Hong Kong, facilitated by a new government office. Some companies remain unnamed, respecting their privacy.
