Giant wicker shark to raise conservation awareness

A huge wicker shark has been built to help raise awareness about protecting the ocean and its creatures. This life-sized model of a basking shark was created by Duncan Cameron, a lecturer at Falmouth University, using salvaged bamboo, willow, and pallet wood. The impressive 20-foot-long shark is being transported on a wooden trailer with wooden wheels, guided by two men at the front and a woman steering from the back. As they push the model past old brick buildings, the shark’s mouth is wide open, making it look like it is feeding.

The installation of the wicker shark at Royal William Yard in Plymouth marks the beginning of Shark Month, a month-long campaign dedicated to marine conservation in Devon. The Shark Trust, a charity focused on protecting sharks, is organizing a series of events throughout July to highlight the importance of shark conservation. Paul Cox, the chief executive of the Shark Trust, explained that this year’s campaign is all about celebrating the fascinating world of sharks. He said the organization has planned many fun and interesting activities for families to learn about conservation and to enjoy discovering more about sharks.

The program includes a 360-degree virtual reality shark experience, wine tastings inspired by the habitats of Great White sharks, rock pooling adventures, and film screenings about sharks. The giant wicker shark, made from recycled materials, is meant to inspire people to think about the importance of protecting the ocean and its wildlife. The Shark Trust hopes that by engaging the public in creative and educational ways, more people will understand why sharks are important and why they need our help. The campaign encourages everyone to get involved in marine conservation and to help ensure that sharks and other sea creatures can thrive in the future.
