Lights, Camera, Portugal! Outdoor Film Fest Brings Culture to Jersey

A unique film screening event took place in Jersey to honor and celebrate Portuguese culture. Film Luso was a free event, open to everyone in the community. Sasha Gibb, the project leader, explained that the main goal was to celebrate, showcase, and share the richness of Portuguese culture with both Portuguese and non-Portuguese residents. She emphasized the importance of reminding or educating people who are not from Portugal about the value and beauty that Portuguese culture brings to Jersey. Sasha said that the event was not just about language or nationality, but about people coming together and connecting through shared experiences. She expressed her excitement about bringing the community closer and helping everyone appreciate the diversity around them.

According to the 2021 Jersey census, there are about 8,000 residents who were born in Portugal or Madeira, and around 9,700 people who identify as ethnically Portuguese. This shows that Portuguese culture is an important part of Jersey's community. Sasha is also leading another initiative called Project Luso, which aims to further highlight Portuguese traditions and contributions in Jersey. They are planning a special celebration for Portugal Day, although the details are still being finalized. The event was supported by the Jersey Community Relations Trust, and more information was available through flyers and online resources. The organizers encouraged people to share their own stories and ideas to help make future events even better.
