From Fan to Fluent: How Learning Korean Boosted My K-Pop Obsession

Katy Richards, a dedicated K-Pop fan from Newport, Shropshire, found herself frustrated by the lack of English subtitles for her favorite Korean songs. Sometimes, she had to wait weeks for fans who spoke Korean to translate the lyrics and add subtitles. Not wanting to wait so long, Katy decided to take matters into her own hands. She traveled to Korea and enrolled in a language school at a Korean university, determined to learn the language herself.

Katy discovered that learning Korean was not as difficult as she expected. She explained, 'Korean is known as the most scientific language on the planet and the actual alphabet you can learn in four hours. ' By learning Korean, Katy could finally understand the lyrics of her favorite songs without waiting for translations. Her love for K-Pop also led her to explore other aspects of Korean culture, such as watching Korean dramas and learning about the country’s traditions. She said, 'K-Pop was definitely my gateway into Korean culture, which I think it is for a lot of people. '

The popularity of K-Pop has been growing rapidly in the UK. Alex Howell, who runs the Lilak K-Pop shop in Shrewsbury, noticed this trend as well. She started importing Korean merchandise as a hobby with friends, but soon realized there was enough interest to turn it into a business. Alex said, 'It's huge, we have a lot of people coming from Telford, Whitchurch and Shrewsbury, so we're really hoping to do more events. ' She believes that the rise of K-Pop has made more people, especially parents, more knowledgeable about Korean music and culture.

K-Pop is not just about music; it also includes movies and TV shows. The recent success of the movie K-Pop Demon Hunters, which drew 18. 4 million global viewers on Netflix, shows how popular Korean culture has become. Netflix has even announced a sequel to the movie, which has been a huge hit with young fans. Katy pointed out that while the movie is different from K-Pop music, it could help introduce more people to Korean pop as they grow older.

The spread of Korean culture around the world is known as 'Hallyu,' or the 'Korean wave. ' Katy explained, 'We've all been enjoying Squid Game, Parasite was huge, K-Pop is huge and so all of that is Hallyu. ' Both Katy and Alex believe that as more people embrace K-Pop and Korean culture, the language barrier will become less of an issue. Katy’s journey shows that learning a new language can open up new opportunities and help people connect with different cultures. She hopes that others will be inspired to learn Korean and discover the rich world of K-Pop and Korean entertainment.
