Golden Globe winner has Oscar in his sights
Peter Straughan, a talented screenwriter, has recently been nominated for an Oscar for his work on the film Conclave. This film has also earned him a Golden Globe award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Peter, who hails from Gateshead, returned to Tyneside to engage with fellow writers after his remarkable achievement. He expressed his emotions while driving over the Tyne Bridge, stating, 'It's the first time I've been home in a long time and I've got to say I got emotional when I was driving over the Tyne Bridge. ' He participated in an event at Newcastle's Live Theatre Company, where audiences could enjoy viewings of Conclave at the Tyneside Cinema over the weekend. The film Conclave is a religious drama that Peter adapted from a book written by Robert Harris. He has previously worked on scripts for the acclaimed BBC drama Wolf Hall. Peter shared that the North East holds a 'special' place in his heart, saying, 'Coming back home is brilliant. The Live Theatre is where I got my start as a writer and I fell in love with film watching along at the Tyneside Cinema. They're brilliant venues. ' At the Golden Globes, Conclave won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay, which was a significant achievement for Peter. In a photograph, he is seen wearing a tuxedo and proudly lifting his Golden Globe award after winning in January 2025. Peter is currently involved in other projects and has expressed a desire to write a script set in the North East. He reflected on his earlier career, stating, 'When I was starting out I never wanted to write about home. I always looked further afield. But coming back made me think I would love to write something and have it filmed in the North East. ' Having already won a Golden Globe for Conclave and a BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy in 2012, Peter believes that winning an Oscar would 'complete' his collection of awards. He envisions displaying all three awards together in a glass case with spotlights shining on them. The 2025 Academy Awards are set to take place in Los Angeles on March 2.
