Rural Areas Get a Speed Boost with Ultra-Fast Broadband Rollout!
The rollout of ultra-fast broadband is making a big difference for people living in rural parts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Over 60,000 homes and businesses in these areas have now been connected to much faster internet, thanks to a government project called Project Gigabit. This project is being funded with about three hundred million pounds, and it aims to bring high-speed internet to places that have not had it before. Some of the latest towns and villages to benefit include Winterton in North Lincolnshire, Fosdyke in Lincolnshire, and Sessay and Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire. Other villages near Barnsley, Huddersfield, Hull, Bradford, York, Boston, and Wisbech in Cambridgeshire have also been connected.
The government shared some numbers to show how many places have been helped so far. In East Yorkshire, 12,800 homes and businesses now have ultra-fast broadband. In North Yorkshire, 14,600 have been connected. South Yorkshire has 7,500 new connections, West Yorkshire has 10,700, York has 3,000, and Lincolnshire has 11,400. The government says that good broadband is important for families, workers, and local businesses. Ian Murray, a minister from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, explained that the project is focused on areas where companies would not usually build broadband because it is too expensive or not profitable. He said that the government wants to make sure everyone has the tools they need to succeed, no matter where they live.
The goal is to connect 123,000 homes and businesses in the region to ultra-fast broadband. The government hopes that by 2032, 99 percent of homes and businesses will have access to this fast internet. The company doing the work is called Quickline, which is based in Hull. Because of this project, 130 people have joined Quickline's apprenticeship program, which helps them learn new skills and find jobs. Many people in rural areas are excited about the new broadband because it makes it easier to work from home, study online, and stay in touch with friends and family. The project is expected to continue, bringing even more connections to people who need them.
