Michelin-starred chef's lobster bisque and foie gras heading to space

Anne-Sophie Pic, one of the world’s most celebrated chefs, is bringing a taste of French fine dining to space. She has teamed up with astronaut Sophie Adenot to create a special menu for Adenot’s upcoming mission to the International Space Station. Normally, astronauts eat freeze-dried or canned food that is designed to last a long time and be easy to eat in zero gravity. However, this time, Sophie Adenot will have the chance to enjoy gourmet dishes like lobster bisque, foie gras cream on toasted brioche, braised beef, and chocolate cream.

The menu, which the European Space Agency calls 'a pinch of France in space,' includes four starters, two main courses, and two desserts. These dishes are not just about taste; they are also meant to help Sophie feel connected to her home country while she is far away from Earth. Adenot said that Anne-Sophie Pic’s cooking reminds her of the French countryside where she grew up, and that these flavors will help her remember her roots.

Making food for space is not easy. There are strict rules: the food must not have crumbs, must be lightweight, and must last for at least 24 months. That’s why most space food is canned, vacuum-packed, or freeze-dried. Fresh fruits and vegetables are rare treats that only arrive when a new supply ship comes. To keep astronauts happy and help them bond, every tenth meal or so is a special 'bonus meal' made just for them, often with the help of a famous chef. Anne-Sophie Pic, who has more Michelin stars than any other female chef, said that cooking for space was an exciting challenge. She and her team had to find ways to make delicious food that also met all the technical requirements for space travel.

Sophie Adenot, who used to be a helicopter test and rescue pilot, has won many awards, including one for her work in promoting gender equality in science. She and Anne-Sophie Pic met in Paris to taste the dishes and decide what would go on the menu. Adenot plans to share the gourmet food with her fellow astronauts on the space station, making it a special moment for everyone. This is the first time that French haute cuisine will be served in space, and both women are proud to be part of this historic event. The European Space Agency hopes that this special menu will not only delight the astronauts’ taste buds but also lift their spirits and remind them of home.
