Meet Ask Grace: The AI Chat Buddy Easing Life for Unpaid Carers

Gloucestershire County Council has launched a new AI-powered messaging service called Ask Grace to support unpaid carers. This service is designed to make it easier for carers to find information and get help whenever they need it. Ask Grace works through Whatsapp, so carers can send messages in their own words and receive quick, personalized responses. The tool directs users to local support services and trusted information, saving them the trouble of searching through many websites or making several phone calls.

Dr Kate Usmar, who is responsible for adult support and independence at the council, explained that unpaid carers often have very little time to look for the help they need. She said Ask Grace was developed with input from carers to make sure it is simple, practical, and truly useful. The tool was tested with carers and local partners to ensure it meets real-life needs and is easy to use.

Safety was a big focus during the development of Ask Grace. Users are advised not to share personal information, and the tool only searches about 60 trusted websites for answers. Dr Usmar said the AI is as safe as possible and does not search the whole internet. The project is funded by a government grant and will cost £28,000 over two years. Michelle Blakely, a health and social care adviser, said the tool can help carers feel more confident and less isolated. However, she also pointed out that while technology can provide information, it cannot replace the support, compassion, and judgment that come from real people. The council hopes Ask Grace will make a positive difference for unpaid carers in Gloucestershire.
