Discover Hidden Art Gems: Northamptonshire's Rare Sketches Unveiled!

The University of Northampton is offering a rare opportunity for the public to view hundreds of original sketches created by two notable artists from the twentieth century. These works, by George Herbert Buckingham Holland and Jean O'Neill, will be displayed as part of a celebration for Northamptonshire Day, which is observed on October 25 by local councils and organizations. Holland, a portrait painter born in Northampton in 1901, trained at the Leicester School of Art and became well known for his detailed pencil and charcoal sketches. His work is featured in the National Portrait Gallery, and the university archives hold around 625 of his sketches, many of which date back to his early years in the 1920s and 1930s.

Holland spent much of his life painting portraits of local dignitaries, university staff, and friends, as well as creating landscapes and murals. His art provides a glimpse into the people and places of Northampton during his lifetime. Jean O'Neill, who studied at the Northampton School of Art in the late 1940s and early 1950s, also has a significant collection in the university archives. Her work includes pencil and charcoal sketches, watercolour travel scenes, and oil portraits of family and friends. O'Neill's paintings capture moments from her travels and everyday life, offering viewers a unique perspective on the region's history and culture.

Mandy Morgan, an archivist at the university, expressed excitement about sharing these collections with the public. She believes that the works of Holland and O'Neill provide a special window into Northampton's artistic heritage and allow the community to connect with its past in a personal way.
