Inside the UK Warehouse Powering the Vinyl Comeback with Robots and Hits

The popularity of vinyl records is growing quickly in the UK, and a large warehouse near Bicester, Oxfordshire, is at the center of this trend. This depot, operated by DP World, handles more than 70 percent of all physical music products sold in the country. Inside, workers in bright pink jackets and white robots move among thousands of boxes filled with records. The warehouse is a lively place, with music playing in the background and staff working together to keep up with the high demand for vinyl. Sam Clarke, the site manager, describes the warehouse as open and full of light and sound. The music that plays depends on who is working, but Sam’s favorite is anything by Fleetwood Mac.

The process of getting records from the factory to music fans is carefully organized. When new records arrive, workers check them to make sure they are in good condition and that the right number has been delivered. The records are then placed in special areas where they can be picked for orders. Hundreds of staff members work alongside 83 robots, which help pick up and move the boxes. These robots are painted in cheerful colors and help the warehouse keep up with the growing number of orders. Once the records are picked, they are labeled and checked again before being sent out to stores and customers across the UK.

The warehouse is especially busy during Record Store Day, a special event for music lovers. This year, the depot shipped more than 200,000 records for Record Store Day, which is a 20 percent increase from last year. The event is becoming almost as busy as Christmas for the warehouse. Angela Howard, a vice president at DP World, says Record Store Day is a time for the music industry to celebrate record shops and the lasting popularity of vinyl. She says the team at the Bicester depot is passionate about supporting this event. In Reading, the manager of Pop Classics, Damian Jones, says Record Store Day is a big event that happens all over the world. Record companies release special records by famous artists, and more young people are getting interested in vinyl. Older collectors are also excited to see records become popular again. Many people enjoy collecting records and listening to music in a way that feels special and nostalgic.
