Formaldehyde is a colorless chemical often used to preserve biological specimens, but it is not safe for people to eat. The American Cancer Society has linked high exposure to formaldehyde in some workplaces to certain types of cancer, although the effects of small amounts are less clear. After confirming the video’s authenticity, local officials in Hebei took legal action against those involved. The government is now working quickly to prevent public panic and restore trust in the food supply. They are conducting spot checks at markets across the country to make sure no more cabbages have been treated with formaldehyde.

In response to the incident, the Xinfadi market in Beijing, which is one of the largest fresh produce markets in the capital, released a statement. They said they had checked their cabbages and found that none of the affected vegetables had entered their market. Local authorities in Kangbao county also promised to strictly punish anyone found breaking the law. The story has received a lot of attention in Chinese media. China produces over 30 million tonnes of cabbages each year, which is nearly half of the world’s total.
