ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has stated that its use of OpenAI's technology in the development of its own artificial intelligence (AI) models was in compliance with the US firm's service terms. This statement was made in response to a claim that it had used the technology to build a rival service.
The claim originated from a report by a US technology outlet, which cited internal sources. The report alleged that ByteDance had covertly used OpenAI's technology to develop its own large language model (LLM), a type of AI that can understand and generate human-like text. The report also suggested that ByteDance attempted to conceal its actions through 'data desensitisation'.
In a statement to the South China Morning Post, ByteDance acknowledged that a small group of its engineers had used OpenAI's API service in an experimental model that was never intended for public launch. The company added that this early work was discontinued in April, following the introduction of a protocol to ensure compliance with OpenAI's terms of use. These terms prohibit the use of output from its GPT products to 'develop models that compete with OpenAI'. However, ByteDance's engineering team continues to use OpenAI's API, albeit to a very limited extent during the evaluation/testing process.
