Cornish Cinema's £1 Tickets: Films, Food & Fun for All!

A community cinema in Cornwall is working to make film screenings and shared meals more accessible to everyone by offering tickets starting at just £1. The social cinema company, 99p Films, has announced its first autumn film series, which will take place in several towns across the county, including Falmouth, Truro, Redruth, Helston, and Newquay. Organisers say that 99p from each ticket will go directly to the filmmakers, supporting their work. The pay-what-you-can system allows people to choose how much they want to pay, with the highest ticket price set at £25.

Each event is designed to be more than just a movie night. Before the film begins, attendees participate in mindful breathing exercises to help them relax and focus. After the screening, there is a group discussion about the topics raised in the film, encouraging people to share their thoughts and learn from each other. The evening ends with a vegetarian or vegan meal made from local ingredients, giving everyone a chance to enjoy healthy food together. Alex Fish, the founder of 99p Films, says these events are meant to help people explore important subjects and connect with others in their community.

The first film in the series is 'My Garden of a Thousand Bees,' which is a collection of short films about the role of bees and other pollinators in the ecosystem. The screenings will start in Truro on Thursday, 18 September, and in Falmouth on Sunday, 21 September 2025, with more events planned in Helston and Redruth later in the year. Other films in the series will focus on topics like sustainable fashion, Palestinian communities living in conflict zones, and sailing without engines. The film series is part of Falmouth Creates, a programme from the Falmouth Business Improvement District that supports local events. Organisers hope these cinema nights will help people learn about social and environmental issues, make new friends, and feel more connected to their community.
