Artist Brings 1920s Oxford to Life in Stunning Brideshead Revisited Art

Weimin He, an artist who has lived in Oxford for over twenty years, was given the opportunity to illustrate the first Chinese edition of Evelyn Waugh's classic novel 'Brideshead Revisited. ' He described the project as both deeply immersive and challenging, taking nearly a year to complete. The book, published in August by Shanghai Literature and Art Publishing House, features twelve charcoal drawings, twelve pen-and-ink illustrations, and a special drawing of Aloysius, the teddy bear belonging to Lord Sebastian Flyte. Only five hundred copies of this edition were printed, making it a unique and limited release. Weimin He said it was a privilege to depict the local Oxford places mentioned in the novel and to research what they were like in the 1920s and 1930s.

The story of 'Brideshead Revisited' follows Charles Ryder, an Oxford student, and his friendship with the eccentric Lord Sebastian Flyte. Many famous Oxford locations, such as the Botanic Garden, Christ Church college, and Thame, are featured in the book. Weimin He tried to create his illustrations from the author's perspective, aiming to capture the atmosphere of nearly a century ago. He read the book countless times in both English and Chinese to understand the characters and the setting. He also drew inspiration from the 1981 TV series and the 2008 film adaptation. One of the scenes he spent the most time on was a bird's-eye view of Charles and Sebastian having a picnic, which he felt was important for showing their relationship.

Weimin He was particularly moved by the epilogue, where Charles Ryder converts to Catholicism. He said this moment was the soul of the book and wanted to find a unique way to illustrate it, rather than simply copying the TV series. As an artist-in-residence at Green Templeton College since 2018, Weimin He knows Oxford very well and often cycles the same routes that the characters traveled in the story. He avoided drawing the most familiar places, like Botley Road and High Street, because they are already part of his daily life, but he thought Chinese readers might find them interesting. He searched for many images from the 1920s and 1930s to make his illustrations as accurate as possible. The translation of the book has been well received in China, and readers have praised his artwork, saying it makes them want to read the novel. Weimin He considers this the best compliment he has ever received.
