AI-Powered Traffic Twin Slashes Delays and Speeds Up Your Commute!

In the Tees Valley region, a new traffic system powered by artificial intelligence is making a real difference for drivers and bus riders. This system, called a 'digital twin,' is a virtual copy of the actual road network. It collects data from GPS devices on buses and sensors placed along the roads. Using this information, the AI predicts where traffic problems might happen and takes action to prevent them. For example, it can change the timing of traffic lights or suggest new routes for buses and cars.

According to Sean Fryer, who manages digital transport for the Tees Valley Combined Authority, the system has already reduced traffic delays by nearly 14 percent in just six months. This means people are spending less time waiting in traffic and more time getting where they need to go. The AI system works automatically in 11 busy areas, or 'hotspots,' across the region. Even though the AI makes many decisions, there are still people watching over the system to make sure everything runs smoothly. Stephen Harker, a local council leader, said the AI is often faster and smarter than humans at finding the best ways to keep traffic moving.

However, not everyone thinks technology alone can solve traffic problems. Matthew Snedker from the Green Party said that if more and more people keep driving cars, the roads will still be crowded. He believes that encouraging people to use buses and bikes is just as important as using new technology. Snedker compared adding more lanes for cars to buying bigger clothes instead of getting healthier. The next steps for the digital twin project include adding more routes and collecting more types of data, such as information about trucks, cyclists, and the environment. The goal is to create a transport system that is not only faster but also better for the planet and for people's wallets.
