Vance calls for stronger India-US relations as trade talks progress

Vance's visit comes as both countries are making strides toward finalizing a trade agreement that India hopes will help it avoid increased tariffs. With a deadline approaching on July 9, many countries, including India, are eager to negotiate trade deals with the US. Vance announced that significant progress has been made in the discussions, including the establishment of key terms for the negotiations. He described this as a crucial step toward achieving the vision set forth by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, as it lays out a clear path toward a final agreement. Vance praised Modi as a skilled negotiator, which earned him applause from the audience. The relationship between Modi and Trump is notably warm, with Modi being one of the first leaders to reach out to Trump after his re-election. However, Trump has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with India's high tariffs, labeling the country as a 'tariff king. ' In a statement following Vance's meeting with Modi, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer pointed out the lack of balance in the trade relationship between the two nations. In response, India has already reduced tariffs on several products and is considering further cuts to appease Trump. However, certain sectors remain contentious, particularly those where the US seeks greater access, but India is protective. Vance also mentioned that the US aims to increase its exports of energy and defense equipment to India. In addition to trade discussions, the two leaders explored opportunities for collaboration in defense, strategic technologies, and energy. Modi expressed his eagerness to host Trump in India later this year for the Quad summit, a significant event that will include leaders from several countries. Following their meeting, Modi hosted a dinner for Vance and his family, where cultural exchanges took place, including Modi gifting peacock feathers to Vance's children. Vance arrived in India with his wife Usha and their three children, who are excited to learn about their Indian heritage. Usha's parents immigrated to the US from Andhra Pradesh, and the family is keen to introduce their children to their Indian roots. Photos of the children dressed in traditional Indian attire were widely shared in the media. After their official meetings, the Vance family took time to explore Jaipur, visiting the historic Amer Fort, and they plan to see the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra before returning to the US.
