Shining Bright: Durham's Military Museum Reopens with Stunning Light Art

The city of Durham is getting ready to welcome visitors to a brand new museum called The Light, which will open its doors in August. This museum is located at Aykley Heads and was once known as the Durham Light Infantry Museum. Over the past two years, the building has been completely transformed. The old museum was stripped down to its basic structure and rebuilt to create a modern and spacious venue. Durham County Council is excited about the opening and expects that tens of thousands of people will visit each year.

The first exhibition at The Light will focus on the connections between light, science, and nature. It will feature works by famous international artists such as Tracey Emin and Olafur Eliasson. Other artists like Chila Burman and Yto Barrada will also have their art on display. One of the highlights of the exhibition is a replica of the light bulb invented by Joseph Swan, a physicist from Sunderland who made important discoveries in the late 1800s. This exhibition aims to show how light has inspired both science and art throughout history.

In addition to the special exhibitions, The Light will have a permanent display about the Durham Light Infantry. This part of the museum will be free for everyone to visit. The venue will also include a cafe, spaces for private events and conferences, and beautiful grounds for visitors to enjoy. Councillor Karen Allison from Durham County Council said that The Light is not just a museum, but also a wonderful place to relax, meet friends, and enjoy the surroundings.

The opening of The Light is happening earlier than expected. Originally, construction was supposed to finish in late 2025, with the museum opening in spring 2026. Thanks to hard work from the council and construction teams, the museum will now open in August 2024. Local leaders, including Councillor Karen Allison and Councillor Joe Quinn, have been involved in the project and are proud of the results. They believe The Light will become an important part of Durham’s cultural life, attracting visitors from near and far. The museum’s modern design, exciting exhibitions, and welcoming atmosphere are sure to make it a popular destination for years to come.
