ADHD drugs have wider life benefits, study suggests

The study involved 148,500 people in Sweden, ranging in age from six to 64, who had been diagnosed with ADHD. About 57% of these people started taking medication, with stimulants being the most commonly prescribed type. The researchers found that those who took ADHD medication were less likely to experience serious issues for the first time, such as suicidal behavior, substance misuse, transport accidents, and criminal activity. For example, the risk of suicidal behavior dropped by 17%, substance misuse by 15%, transport accidents by 12%, and criminal behavior by 13%. When looking at people who had these problems more than once, the medication was linked to even greater reductions, such as a 25% drop in substance misuse and criminal behavior.

Experts believe that ADHD medication helps by reducing impulsive actions and improving concentration, which can make people less likely to get into dangerous situations or act aggressively. However, getting access to the right medication can be difficult in some countries, with long waiting times and shortages of certain drugs. Some experts warn that untreated ADHD can lead to self-medication with alcohol or other drugs, poor mental health, and even time in jail. While the study shows that medication can have many benefits, it also points out that more research is needed to understand how different doses and whether people actually take their medicine affect these outcomes.
