Down's syndrome dance class celebrates anniversary

A dance class specifically designed for young adults with Down's syndrome has recently celebrated its one-year anniversary. This vibrant class is located in Langton Green, near Tunbridge Wells, and it has brought joy and connection to many participants. The idea for this wonderful initiative came from Sarah Wheatley, who wanted to introduce her daughter, who has Down's syndrome, to the world of dance. With the support of Michelle Clark, the founder of Happy Me Dance, and funding from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, Project Wave was launched in 2023. Michelle emphasized that the primary goal of the class was to create a safe and secure environment where everyone could feel connected. She expressed her excitement, saying, 'Now, we just have this dynamic energy which is just incredible. ' Michelle also strives to provide opportunities for each participant to be playful and to have their own moments of improvement during the class. According to the Down's Syndrome Association, there are approximately 40,000 individuals in the UK living with Down's syndrome. The classes offered in Langton Green are tailored to meet the needs of all age groups, allowing participants to reconnect and discover their 'rhythm of life' through the joy of dance. Rosa Monckton, whose daughter Domenica has Down's syndrome, shared her thoughts on the program, stating that it has also fostered connections among parents. She remarked, 'If parents can help other parents, it is a very good thing. It is lonely, and parents do not get the support they need. ' Rosa believes that what Michelle has created is 'absolutely exceptional' and hopes to expand the initiative to include individuals with various disabilities or those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Clara, a participant in the dance sessions, expressed her feelings about the classes, saying they are 'my life' and that they make her feel 'happy, safe, and proud. ' James Bowdidge, who serves as the chair of the Langton Green Village Society community hub, added that the dance class has been a 'huge success' and that it is 'wonderful to come and watch. ' This dance class is more than just a place to learn dance moves; it is a community where friendships are formed, and everyone is encouraged to express themselves and support one another.
