Explore 300+ Stunning Artworks Online from Isle of Man's Loan Collection!
The Isle of Man Arts Council has just made its Modern and Contemporary Art Loan Collection available to view online for the first time. This collection includes more than 300 pieces of modern art, and now anyone with internet access can explore the artworks from their own home or school. The collection features works by world-famous artists such as Dame Tracey Emin, David Hockney, Pablo Picasso, and Martin Parr. It also highlights the talent of several well-known Manx artists, including Michael Sandle and Bryan Kneale, making it a great way to discover both international and local art.
The digital portal is easy to use and includes an interactive map that shows where some of the artworks are currently displayed. The loan collection was started 30 years ago with the goal of making art more accessible to the public. Over the years, pieces from the collection have been shown in offices, community buildings, and schools across the Isle of Man. This means that people who might not usually visit an art gallery have had the chance to see and enjoy these works in their everyday lives.
One of the highlights of the collection is a series of photographs by Martin Parr, which capture moments from Tynwald Day, an important event on the Isle of Man. One memorable photo features Mark Huston, a prison officer with a long beard, holding a plastic pint glass of beer. The collection also includes sculptures, such as a metal piece by Robert Jones that features interlocked circles and is displayed on a concrete plinth in the arboretum.
Suzie Walker, the arts project coordinator, explained that digitizing the collection helps the council keep track of the artworks and care for them more effectively. She also said that making the collection available online gives the public a chance to see the full range of art that the council has collected. Whether you are an artist, a collector, or just someone who enjoys looking at art, the online collection is a valuable resource.
Currently, a selection of the artworks is on display in Peel at the House of Manannan, thanks to a collaboration between the Manx National Heritage and the council. The exhibition, called Art Adventures for Beginners, runs until 7 June. The artworks were photographed for the project by Carola Rush, who worked with Suzie Walker to make sure each piece was shown at its best.
The Isle of Man Arts Council hopes that by making the collection available online, more people will be able to enjoy and learn about art. They encourage anyone interested to visit the website, watch videos, or follow the BBC Isle of Man for more stories and updates about art on the island. This new digital archive is a great way for people of all ages to experience art, even if they cannot visit the gallery in person.
