Ai Weiwei Celebrates Manchester's Bold Art Scene with Stunning New Exhibit

Another highlight is a huge mural called History of Bombs, created with 3. 5 million Lego bricks. The exhibition also includes a Ming dynasty timber-framed great hall, which was reassembled to show the greatness of Chinese history. Ai Weiwei is also known for designing the famous Bird's Nest stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

During the opening of the exhibition, Ai Weiwei will take part in a performance piece that recreates his 81-day detention by Chinese authorities in 2011. He wants visitors to think about what it means to live in a world that is deeply divided and full of challenges. He believes that understanding history is important for standing up for truth and justice. The exhibition is being held at Aviva Studios, a new £240 million arts center that opened in 2023.
