Step Inside Constable’s Hay Wain: A Theatrical Journey Through Art’s Hidden Stories

A new theatre production called The Hay Wain is set to tour Suffolk and Essex this August, bringing to life the famous painting by John Constable. The painting, created in 1821, shows a peaceful rural scene by the River Stour in Flatford, Suffolk. It features a horse and cart moving through the water, a cottage on the riverbank, and green fields stretching into the distance. John Constable, who was born in Suffolk 250 years ago, is known for his beautiful paintings of the English countryside.

Packing Shed Theatre, a company based in Colchester, Essex, is behind this new play. Their artistic director, Neil Jones, says the show will explore the lives of the people in the painting, not just the landscape. Instead of focusing on Constable himself, the play tells the story of the villagers and workers who might have lived in that time. The actors will show what life was like for them, including their struggles, hopes, and the strength they needed to get by. The play aims to go beyond the peaceful look of the painting and reveal the real stories hidden beneath the surface.

The first performances will be held at Christchurch Park in Ipswich, close to Christchurch Mansion where the original painting is currently on display. The painting has been loaned by the National Gallery and is being shown in Suffolk for the first time as part of the Constable 250 celebrations. After Ipswich, the play will travel to several other locations, including Halesworth, Maldon, Flatford Mill, Hadleigh, and Colchester. The theatre company hopes that audiences will see the countryside differently after watching the play, understanding that there is more to these beautiful scenes than meets the eye. The show has been described as East Anglia's own version of Les Miserables, with music and a powerful story about the people of the past.
