Bonfire Night in Hong Kong just wasn’t the same for all that I tried. Being back in the UK means a proper celebration of plotter Guy Fawkes’ downfall
Hong Kong is renowned for its vibrant and colourful festivals, such as the lion dances during Lunar New Year and moon-gazing during the mid-autumn festival. These events signify the transition of seasons and are a significant part of the city's culture. Having resided in Hong Kong, I have had the pleasure of experiencing these festivities. However, there was one British festival that I deeply missed - Guy Fawkes Night. This event was a highlight of my childhood in London, rivalling the excitement of Christmas and my birthday.
Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated annually on November 5 in Britain. The event features spectacular firework displays, torch-lit processions, and bonfires, reminiscent of the Tai Hang Fire Dragon festival and the national day fireworks in Hong Kong. The festival commemorates the failed attempt by Catholic conspirators to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605, an event known as the Gunpowder Plot. This celebration is particularly popular in Kent, southern England, where I currently reside.
During my 28 years in Hong Kong, I attempted to keep the spirit of Guy Fawkes Night alive. I would revisit the history of the Gunpowder Plot and prepare traditional bonfire night food such as jacket potatoes, sausages, and beans. Occasionally, the Disney fireworks across the water would coincide with my celebration. Once, I even managed to light a bonfire in Mui Wo, Lantau. However, it wasn't quite the same. Now that I'm back in Britain, I can fully participate in the preparations and celebrations of Guy Fawkes Night. Despite the rain last year, the bonfire celebration in my village was worth the wait. The towering bonfire and the effigy of Guy Fawkes engulfed by flames were a haunting sight, and the fireworks were, as always, a joy to watch. As we celebrate this long-standing tradition, let's ensure we do so safely.
