Hidden 17th-Century Dice Game Painting Rolls Back Into Spotlight!

The Dice Players, a painting created by the French Baroque artist Georges de La Tour around 1650, has returned to its home at Preston Park Museum in Stockton-on-Tees. This artwork shows five people playing a game of dice at a table. The scene is dark, but there are bright colors like orange and purple on the players' elegant clothes. The painting is set in a large gold frame, and two museum staff members recently placed it back into its protective case on the gallery wall.

This painting has an interesting history. It was donated to the museum in the 1930s by Annie Elizabeth Clephan in memory of her father, Edwin. However, for about forty years, the painting was stored in the museum's attic, and its true value was not recognized. It was only during a routine check in 1972 that Christopher Wood from Christie's noticed an entry for an 'old painting' called Throwing the Dice by de La Tour. This discovery caused a lot of excitement, and the painting quickly became the most famous piece in the museum's collection.

Since then, The Dice Players has been enjoyed by visitors from around the world. It was recently loaned to the Jacquemart-André Museum in Paris, allowing even more people to see it. After returning from France, a specialist conservator worked on the painting, especially its frame, to make sure it looked its best. The painting is now back on display at Preston Park Museum, where it is protected by a glass case with a purple frame. The museum says that loaning the painting to other museums helps more people learn about Stockton's art collection. Councillor Nigel Cooke, who is in charge of culture for Stockton Borough Council, said that it is wonderful to have the painting back, and he hopes it will continue to be a highlight for everyone who visits. The Dice Players is known for its dramatic use of light, which makes the scene look tense and exciting, even though the candle lighting the players' faces is not shown in the picture.
