Shropshire Shop Spreads Dolly’s Spirit with Free Guitars for Girls

Alex Harris, the owner of Big Al's Music Emporium in Wem, Shropshire, decided to honor the memory of Dolly Parton by giving away guitars to young women and girls. Dolly Parton, who passed away on 25 August at the age of 80, was not only a legendary country music star but also known for her kindness and support for young people. Inspired by her generosity, Alex wanted to help girls in his community who might not have the chance to own a guitar. He posted on Facebook that he had a small guitar he wanted to give to a girl who could not afford one. The response was overwhelming, with thousands of likes and shares. People praised Alex for his thoughtful gesture and many wanted to get involved.

Because of the huge response, Alex ended up giving away three guitars instead of just one. People who saw his post started donating items to go with the guitars, such as gig bags, tuners, extra strings, and books to help the girls learn to play. One of the guitars went to an 18-year-old girl with dwarfism who needed a smaller instrument. Thanks to the donations, she also received a guitar strap, a learn-to-play book, and an electric tuner. Another guitar was given to a girl in primary school. She received the original three-quarter size guitar, a padded gig bag, a book, and a capo, all donated by generous people who wanted to help.

The third guitar was given to 17-year-old Amelia, who said Dolly Parton was a big influence in her life. Amelia admired Dolly's confidence and her ability to believe in herself. Her mother saw Alex's Facebook post and nominated her to receive the guitar. Amelia was thrilled and said it felt unreal to be chosen. She is excited to learn to play the guitar and hopes to one day play songs for her friends and family. For now, playing guitar is a hobby, but she looks up to artists like Dolly Parton and is inspired by their talent and confidence. Alex Harris hopes to continue this tradition and give away a guitar every year, helping more girls discover the joy of music and honoring Dolly Parton's legacy of kindness and support for young people.
