Lincoln's Epic 'Papestry' Drawn to Fame with 7,000 Visitors!

The 'papestry,' a remarkable 18-foot-long drawing by architectural designer Matthew Wright, has found a permanent home at the Usher Gallery in Lincoln. This detailed artwork captures the historic Bailgate area and Steep Hill, two of the city's most famous locations. Wright spent nine months working on the piece, carefully drawing each building to make sure it looked just like the real thing. His background in architecture helped him pay attention to every detail, from the cobbled streets to the grand Lincoln Cathedral.

The drawing was first displayed at the Usher Gallery from June 20 to July 12, and it quickly became a huge attraction. Around 7,000 people visited the gallery to see the 'papestry' during this short period, a number that the museum staff described as 'unheard of. ' On the final Saturday alone, about 1,000 visitors came through the doors. James Sharples, who works at the gallery, said it was absolutely fantastic to see so many people interested in the artwork. He called it a big win for the gallery and was thrilled that the drawing would now be on permanent display.

Matthew Wright described the process of creating the 'papestry' as similar to 'birthing a child' because of the time, effort, and care it required. He said he enjoyed every part of making the drawing, especially learning about the history and architecture of the buildings he was drawing. The artwork is done in black and white and features some of Lincoln's most iconic landmarks, including the front of Lincoln Cathedral. Now, with the drawing on permanent display, visitors to the Usher Gallery can enjoy a unique view of Lincoln's history and architecture, all captured through Wright's careful and passionate work.
