Saving Wales' Rare Wildlife: A £1M Mission to Rescue Vanishing Species

Nant Ffrancon, a lush valley in Eryri National Park, is known for its steep hills, scattered trees, winding streams, and a charming stone cottage. This area is considered one of the most unique landscapes in Wales, but experts are raising alarms about its future. According to the National Trust, the valley is experiencing serious ecological decline, putting some of Wales' most endangered species at risk of disappearing completely. Among those at risk are the mountain blackbird and the mountain finch, both of which are struggling to survive in the changing environment.

To address this crisis, a new project with a budget of one million pounds has been launched to restore and conserve over 4,000 acres of habitats in Eryri. Simon Rogers from the National Trust described the situation as a 'nature emergency,' emphasizing that many species in the valley are on the brink of extinction. The project will bring together local communities, tenant farmers, and volunteers to help restore the land and protect its wildlife. One of the main focuses is the ring ouzel, a small bird with dark feathers and a white chest, which is now red-listed due to its declining numbers. The valley is one of the last strongholds for this bird, and the team is working to understand its needs and manage the land to ensure its survival.

The valley is also home to rare alpine flowers, such as the Tufted Saxifrage. This delicate flower has suffered from recent droughts, with only three surviving in Cwm Idwal this year. If nothing is done, these flowers could vanish from Wales entirely. Another initiative, called Mountain Jewels of Eryri, is part of a partnership led by Plantlife Cymru to protect rare alpine plants. The restoration work will be closely monitored through ecological surveys, tracking the presence of animals like the woodcock and otter, and plants such as aspen and juniper, to measure the health of the valley.

Innovative technology is also being used to help manage the land. Farmers are using GPS collars on their cattle to control grazing more precisely, ensuring that the animals graze in the right areas at the right times. This not only benefits the cattle but also helps maintain the balance of the ecosystem. Community involvement is a key part of the project, with opportunities for people to volunteer, participate in monitoring, and learn about the landscape. School visits are common, allowing students to see the effects of conservation efforts firsthand.

The project is funded by nearly one million pounds from the Heritage Fund, delivered on behalf of the Welsh government and in partnership with Natural Resources Wales. Simon Rogers hopes that the work being done now will lay the foundation for long-term recovery, ensuring that the unique wildlife and habitats of Nant Ffrancon are protected for generations to come. By involving the community and using new technology, the project aims to create a sustainable future for this special part of Wales.
