Calling All Young Steel Pan Stars: Join the Caribbean Beat Orchestra!

CultureMix Art is a not-for-profit arts group based in Reading, Berkshire, in the south of England. The group has been teaching young people how to play the steel pan for 25 years. The steel pan is a musical instrument made from large metal oil drums, and it comes from the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The group is part of Arts Council England's national portfolio, which means it is recognized for its work in the arts.

One of the main goals of CultureMix Art is to encourage children and teenagers to try playing the steel pan. Artistic director Mary Genis believes that all young people should have the chance to learn music, not just those who can afford lessons. That is why children under 16 can attend classes for free. Mary says that playing the steel pan helps young people build confidence and feel like they belong. She often sees her students become more outgoing and happy as they learn.

Bilal, who is 13, plays the tenor pan in the orchestra. He says that joining the group felt like being part of a family. At first, he was shy, but after playing at the Notting Hill Carnival, he became much more confident. He remembers being on a float, playing music, and seeing all the people enjoying the parade. Pablo, who is 12, plays the cello pan, which is made from three steel drums. He started when he was eight and says that learning new songs is always exciting. He has made many friends in the orchestra and enjoys every lesson.

CultureMix Art offers five lessons each week, and two of them are just for young people under 16. The group also visits schools and youth clubs to introduce more children to the steel pan. Mary Genis says that young people are naturally creative, and the steel pan is a great way for them to explore music. You do not need to know how to read music to start playing. Mary hopes that some of her students will go on to work in the creative industry and earn money from their musical skills.
