German anti-Islam activist injured in knife attack

A man wielding a knife attacked six people, including a police officer, at a market square in the south-west German city of Mannheim. The attack took place just before noon on Friday and was captured on a YouTube livestream. The livestream showed the attacker stabbing a man and then a police officer who came to the man's aid. The police officer is currently in critical condition. The attacker was shot and injured by another police officer. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the incident, describing it as terrible, and expressed his solidarity with the victims. He emphasized that violence is absolutely unacceptable in a democracy and called for severe punishment for the perpetrator. The police in Mannheim announced a major police operation in the city's market square, and a rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene. According to a follow-up statement from the police, the attack occurred at 11:35 (10:35 BST), and a firearm was used against the attacker.
