Robot Surgery Marvel: Patient Bounces Back Fast After Cancer Battle

Nick Samiotis, a 54-year-old man from Norfolk, recently underwent a groundbreaking robotic surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his oesophagus, which is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Before the surgery, Nick had trouble swallowing and even walking his dog, and he often felt tired and needed naps. After being diagnosed with cancer, he had chemotherapy to shrink the tumour. Then, doctors at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital used a Da Vinci surgical robot to perform a 12-hour operation. Nick described the experience as 'incredible' because he was able to recover much faster than he expected. Instead of spending three weeks in the hospital and having a large scar, he only had small keyhole scars and was walking his dog just nine days after the operation.

The hospital where Nick had his surgery is now the largest provider of robotic surgery in the East of England. They have four Da Vinci robots and are raising money for a fifth. The robots are used for many types of surgeries, including those for the stomach, chest, and even for children. Surgeon Nicholas Penney, who performed Nick's operation, said that robotic surgery is more precise and causes less pain for patients. The robot's arms can move like a human hand but with even more accuracy, and the surgeon controls them from a special console with a 3D view inside the patient's body. This technology helps doctors remove more of the tumour and reduces the risk of complications like pneumonia.

Nick's daughter, Tabitha, was nervous about the robotic surgery at first, but she trusted the medical team. She was relieved and happy to see her father recover so quickly. Nick still needs more chemotherapy and has to adjust to a new diet, but he is grateful for the chance to live a normal life again. He hopes his story will encourage others to trust new medical technology. The hospital believes that robotic-assisted surgery is the future and plans to use it for even more patients in the coming years.
