She also revealed that her partner had died due to gun violence, describing it as a disease that has claimed too many lives. Her ex-fiancé, Sutton Tennyson, who was also the father of her son, was fatally shot in 2018. Simmons clarified that she did not intend to promote gun violence by carrying the purse and described it as a mistake that does not define her or her commitment to ending gun violence. She offered her deepest apologies to anyone who was hurt or offended by her actions. At the Black Entertainment Awards in Los Angeles, she posed with the purse, which matched her green jeweled dress, and even pointed it at photographers on the red carpet.
