Kickoff to Unity: South Asian Football Stories Score Big at Hatfield Exhibit

The Striving for Unity exhibition at The Galleria in Hatfield is a special event that celebrates South Asian Heritage Month by sharing the stories of people involved with the Khalsa Youth Football Academy. This academy, based in Letchworth, has played a big role in helping young people from South Asian backgrounds find a place in football. The exhibition features banners, memorabilia, and even blue star-shaped balloons, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Visitors can see football shirts, photographs, and artwork that tell the story of how football has helped break down barriers and bring the community together.

Bal Singh started the Khalsa Youth Football Academy in the late 1980s because he noticed that South Asian people were not well represented in football. He wanted to give young Asians a chance to play, improve their skills, and feel like they belonged. Over the years, the academy has become a place where young people can make friends, learn teamwork, and feel proud of their heritage. Bal believes that sports are a powerful way to connect people from different backgrounds and help them understand each other better.

People who joined the academy as children have grown up to become coaches and role models. Ricky Dhillon, who joined at age ten, says the academy gave him a sense of community and a safe space to play. He is now a futsal coach and wants to inspire others with his story. Paul Singh, who has been involved for fifteen years, remembers how important it was to see people like himself represented in football. The exhibition also includes memorabilia from Team India's victory at the 2010 Street Child World Cup and artwork that explores themes like racism, inequality, and community unity. By sharing these stories, the exhibition hopes to honor the contributions of the South Asian community and encourage more young people to get involved in football.
