James Howells, a computer engineer from Newport, is on a quest to recover a massive fortune in Bitcoin that he believes is buried in a landfill. This fortune amounts to an astonishing £620 million, which is equivalent to about 8,000 Bitcoins that he lost back in 2013. In an effort to reclaim his lost wealth, James has attempted to sue the Newport city council to gain access to the landfill site located on Newport's Docks Way. He has also sought £495 million in compensation for his lost Bitcoins, but the council has chosen not to comment further on the matter. The Newport council has plans to close the landfill in the financial year of 2025-26 and has received permission to build a solar farm on the land, which is expected to power the council's new garbage trucks. James expressed his surprise at the council's decision to close the landfill so soon, especially since they previously claimed in court that allowing him to search for his Bitcoin would have a significant negative impact on the residents of Newport. He stated, 'The council planning on closing the landfill so soon is quite a surprise, especially since it claimed at the High Court that closing the landfill to allow me to search would have a huge detrimental impact on the people of Newport, whilst at the same time they were planning to close the landfill anyway. ' The landfill itself contains over 1. 4 million tonnes of waste, and James believes that his hard drive, which contains the lost Bitcoins, is located in an area that holds around 100,000 tonnes of waste. He mentioned, 'I would be potentially interested in purchasing the landfill site. ' The value of Bitcoin is known to fluctuate, but it is estimated that James's coins are worth hundreds of millions of pounds. He has discussed the possibility of purchasing the landfill with investment partners, and it remains a viable option for him. Additionally, James intends to appeal the decision made by Judge Keyser, who dismissed his case. The judge stated that there were no valid grounds for the claim and that there was 'no realistic prospect' of success at trial. He also noted that too much time had elapsed since the hard drive was lost and the claim was filed.
